„ConMoto was my extended workbench with our team at the Chennai site – we worked together extremely well,” says Markus Korsten, Chief Manufacturing Officer at Apollo Tyres, with approval. That is how Korsten summarizes a 12-month project four ConMoto consultants co-led at the Indian premises of the tyre manufacturer.

The comprehensive project refined the Apollo manufacturing system in a factory with more than 2,000 employees and an annual turnover of more than 400 million Euros. The most significant results were an output increase of 55 percent and an increase in overall efficiency by 30 percent. These improvements derived from the implementation of a top-notch lean production layout based on perfection, flow, tact, and pull criteria as well as the sustainable introduction of 5S and 7V principles.

The Apollo executives were especially positive about the ConMoto consultants’ focus on hands-on solutions and their pragmatism. Markus Korsten finds: “ConMoto is implementation-oriented and team-driven. They cooperate closely with the shop floor team.”

Important milestones of the project were:

  • Plant assessment and benchmark tour,
  • Assessment of maintenance efficiency based on the ConMoto MaintenanceScoreTests© and implementation of a risk- and availability-oriented maintenance strategy,
  • Blue sky workshop and preparation of a masterplan for the transformation into a state-of-the-art LEAN facility,
  • Implementation of project and risk management,
  • Detailed layout planning,
  • Introduction of standardized work,
  • Implementation of shop floor management including focus board, KPI tracking and structured troubleshooting across all levels of management,
  • Training and coaching for a lean culture transformation across all levels of management,
  • Introduction of challenge days and stress tests for stabilization during the start-up period,
  • Optimization of inbound, factory logistics and outbound processes by means of the ConMoto LogisticScoreTest©.

Additionally, ConMoto supported the management team in change management. A Chennai plant manager summarizes their experiences as follows: „After the completion of our project, I feel like I have changed from an old to a new company. I am in the 20th year of my career now and I’m looking forward to working at this new, exciting company Apollo Tyres for another 20 years.“ The successful transformation speaks for itself: Now, Chennai is a benchmark factory of the tyre manufacturer.

First podium finish for HWA Racelab

Stoffel Vandoorne/HWA Racelab celebrates rank three in Rome. Congratulations from ConMoto!

Stoffel Vandoorne attained the first podium position for his team HWA Racelab by coming in third at the Formula E Prix in Rome. Congratulations from ConMoto to the driver and the whole team!

Performing exceptionally well during qualifying and the following Super Pole, the Belgian paved the way for his best racing result of the season so far. In Hong Kong, he had already demonstrated his skills with a fast course and thus, pole position. In Rome, he qualified for the Super Pole session comprising the six best drivers with the fourth-fastest lap time.

Vandoorne made a successful race start, passed GEOX Dragon pilot Jose Maria Lopez and advanced to third position. Round one saw a collision of several vehicles in one of the tight chicanes. Gary Paffett, the second driver of HWA Racelab, was also involved in the accident. The race was suspended and Paffet could unfortunately not continue due to his damaged bolide.

After a 45 minute break the race resumed behind the safety car. Vandoorne continued to drive constantly fast lap times with his VFE-05 bolide. He remained in the top three and even competed for rank two. Vandoorne also kept his professional calm during the final laps and secured the great success for HWA Racelab, obtaining 15 points. Rome’s winner was New Zealander Mitch Evans (Panasonic Jaguar) followed by the German driver André Lotterer (DS Techeetah).

Medium-sized German companies are still forgoing digitization opportunities

KfW Digitization Report 2018 (in German only)

According to the 2018 digitization report of the German development bank KfW, the digitization of smaller and medium-sized companies in Germany is progressing gradually. Between 2015 and 2017, 30 % of the 3.76 million medium-sized companies have completed digitization projects successfully. In comparison to the years 2014 to 2016, the percentage has risen by four points. Encouragingly, the study also notes an increase of the digitization rate throughout companies of all sizes and almost all fields of the German economy.

Digitization investments remained at a comparably low level: medium-sized companies spent short of EUR 15 bil. on digitization projects in 2017 – EUR 1 bil. more than during the preceding year. The most important topic for companies is the digitization of customer relations and supplier management at 56 %. Additionally, the “digitizers” are concentrating on the modernization of IT structures (53 %). The expansion of specific know-how (38 %) and the re-organization of workflows (25 %) are also relevant issues. The authors of the study are regarding one third of the smaller and medium-sized companies as “notorious stragglers” that were rarely using even basic digital applications. Simultaneously, only short of one fifth of the medium-sized companies may be considered digitization pioneers.

ConMoto projects are introducing innovative paths to digitization as a lever for productivity gains in both medium- and larger-sized companies. Four- or five-day workweek?

We offer our consultants a flexible working time model. They may choose between a four-day or five-day workweek whilst receiving the same basic salary. By offering this possibility, we also hope to convince more women to choose a career as a business consultant.

Our employees may adjust their working time to individual needs. The attainable salary differentiation between the two different workweek models results from our transparent, dynamic bonus system. We reward performance!

Changing between the two different workweeks is possible at any given time. Still, the period of remaining in one system should always exceed three months. Additional reductions of working hours are also temporarily available as agreed. We profit from the individual adjustment of working hours – so do our employees and clients.

ConMoto congratulates Finja Bormann to an excellent tournament weekend in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle. Riding “A crazy Son of Lavina” at the Preis von Nordrhein-Westfalen, an international S*** show jumping tournament, she scored third place. The pair flawlessly mastered both the regular show jumping course and the jump-off, only bested by the winner Michael Jung by mere 24 hundredths of a second and Dutchman Lars Kersten by two hundredths of a second.

Highly appreciated as well is the eleventh place of Finja Bormann on „A crazy Son of Lavina“ at the S****-rated International Großer Preis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the highest endowed show jumping tournament of the event in Dortmund. At the regular show jumping course, they were among the fastest competitors. Unfortunately, faults for a knockdown prevented their participation in the jump-off, for which eight flawless pairs had been able to qualify altogether. Due to the fast course, Finja Bormann scored eleventh place.

Rank nine and twelve on “Oktavian” in two smaller international S competitions completed Finja Bormann’s tournament weekend.
